Gibson TB-3 #8739-16, the “George Frost”

#8739-16 (see Gibson banjo serial numbers vs. factory order numbers) is a fully original TB-3 dating to 1927.  The longtime (and possibly original) owner of this banjo was George Frost (1913–2002).  Mr. Frost was a civil engineer and 1935 graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; his son recalls that his father’s work as a construction site manager took the family all over the country, and that “the banjo always ‘moved’ with us in the car.”  Mr. Frost is shown above in three period photos, including one showing part of his act which included a second musician, hidden behind a curtain, taking care of the left-hand fingering.
